Much of the Frick's collection comprises European paintings, sculptures and decorative arts from the 13th to the 19th centuries, a period from which gender and queer identity are typically excluded. This new installation tells a fuller story by placing four NYC artists in galleries that house Dutch masters. The first rotation, running into January 2022, pairs paintings by Doron Langberg and Salman Toor with Hans Holbein the Younger’s Sir Thomas More and Johannes Vermeer’s Mistress and Maid and Officer and Laughing Girl, respectively. The second does the same for paintings by Jenna Gribbon and Toyin Ojih Odutola with ones by Holbein and Rembrandt. The Frick will hold conversations with the artists and curators on the stories behind the pieces.
